INFLUENCERS is a short documentary that explores what it means to be an influencer and how trends and creativity become contagious today in music, fashion and entertainment. The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach. Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives (advertising, design, fashion and entertainment) who are shaping today’s pop culture.”Influencers” belongs to the new generation of short films, webdocs, which combine the documentary style and the online experience. The Dark Side Of The Lens is a short film that shows a side to surfing that few of us, as observers or surfers, will glimpse: the life of the photographer. Renowned surf photographer Mickey Smith worked with Allan Wilson (director of photography) from the Astray Collective to show what drives him to spend countless hours in cold and hostile waters in search of a single shot…“I wanted to create that something that would give insight into what it takes to grind out a living as a water-based photographer in the surfing industry,” Smith explains, “to provide a short, experimental glimpse into life lived in the shadow of what is, for me, an obsessive pursuit.”We at (echo)witness love the message of the film: “If your life is spent simply observing and documenting what you see, are you ever really present? It’s this willingness to go unnoticed, to hide in the shadows and sacrifice personal notoriety for the sake of one’s art…”
Copywriter/Director Alec Brownstein was out of work and looking for a creative way to get noticed by the big players in his industry. His cunning idea was to create personal Google ads for the top NYC creative directors…His theory was that when they googled themselves, they would see his ad at the top of the page…At $0.10 per click, Brownstein’s ads cost him a total of $6 and got him four meetings and two job offers. Pretty damn brilliant. Check the video below:
Created by Jonathan Harris and Sep Mavar, We Feel Fine “is an artwork authored by everyone. In keeping with the (echo)witness philosophy, we thought you might like some simple advice on a Friday afternoon…Now go make something!
It’s been one of those weeks at the (echo)witness office. It’s cold outside, our creativity has felt stifled and we needed a change of perspective. And then by stroke of luck, when we were going through some old TED Talks, we found this gem from Paula Scher. Her talk, entitled Great Design is Serious (Not Solemn), made our day and reminded us that every creative person will get into a rut sometimes…and every once in a while, we need to create again, just for the fun of it. Be inspired.
We heard Two Gallants on the college radio station this morning and it reminded us how amazing and underrated they are. Definitely one of our favorite bands of all time. The songwriting alone should make you fall in love but then they add the creative drums and finger-picking…dope. If you haven’t heard them before: grab some headphones, some brown liquor and enjoy the experience. Plus, they are great live so try to catch a show if you can…Their site is here.
